I’ve lately been taking a nice break from normal pen and paper drawings and then silly colourings on the computer, to doing full on pixel art; that is I’ve been drawing lots of pixels. In particular for one picture; that is a picture for Chris’ flash game lessons.
Drawing in this format is very time consuming... I don’t know if it’s just me doing it the stupid way or if it is in fact very time consuming, but it sure takes a hell of a lot of time to do.
This is the sort of finished product for a detective character;

| Edgar the Detective guy |
His name is Edgar; he is a detective who will be the sort of main character of my game. Funny thing is, this drawing took me at least five hours to do because of how I do my pixel art, I always go around and add the right colour for each pixel individually to make sure that it’s the way I want it. Most of the time it doesn’t even end up as I’ve imagined it, I know for a fact that I’m not very satisfied with Edgar here... But if I went back and changed everything I wasn’t very satisfied with at the time then I’d be tired all the time instead of charming.
This isn’t the only piece of pixel art that I done for University though, before I also done a sort of placeholder picture for the archer in our group project. This one I was a little more satisfied with, it was on a much smaller scale as well so it was done twice as fast;
This took me about an hour and a half on a Monday, and I am more pleased with it rather than Edgar. It just generally looks better and it’s just over all cooler than Edgar, but maybe I subconsciously made Edgar look like a boring old dude, because that’s who he is, but the archer is supposed to be a badass adventure guy? No idea. I just don’t see fun anywhere in murder mysteries and so I couldn’t draw a fun looking character I guess... But I really like murder mysteries.
Anyway, it seems as the smaller the scale for my sprite arts becomes, the better they start looking, and this is a small sprite board for one of my characters in Symbols of Magic;
I am infinitely more pleased with these sprites over the previous two. As the scale get’s smaller the sprites seem to get better in quality, whenever I do pixel art. And it probably took me only an hour to get this one right.
I don’t know where I’m going with this, but I guess I just wanted to say that I quite like pixel art and for me it usually ends up best when it’s on a smaller scale... Though this is only true for me, there are massive pixel art pictures that are bloody fantastic, I can tell you that.
This guy, for example. He's some sort of pro, if I had that kind of talent then I'd use it to pay for my lunch.
